How the club came about
Rovers Netball Club, etstablished in 1972, Josie Blakeley was working at the Railways making beds and a few of the girls started talking that they should start up a netball team. Initially Josie and Helen Krebs were the Committee, the umpires and even made the uniforms! Every year they would make blue skirts (this was long before the pleated skirts) for the teams and purchased light blue tops to play in.
The Club was called Rovers due to the girls playing, who had husbands playing for Rovers Football Club.
There were 2 teams - A and B grade (there was no A Reserve then). The teams grew to 4 but the A grade players were getting older and teams were slowly dropping off. In 1989, Cheryl Talbot of Federals Netball Club, kindly donated her services as a Coach and a new A Grade team was formed.
A Grade used to have A 1 & A 2 divisions and played on the now Courts 1 & 2. The club only fielded senior teams until 1985 when the juniors came on board. The age group started with 17 & Under. Mrs. Pat Sullivan was the junior co-ordinator and for many years looked after the juniors. Mid 1990's Michele Turk from Braitling School became our Junior Co-odinator and this is why we have the association with this school today. The juniors grew from 2 teams to approximately 12, ranging from 9 & Under, 11 & under, 13 & Under and 15 & Under.
In 1992 the Railway Club sponsored Rovers Netball and then became Railway Rovers Netball Club. The uniforms then became yellow and blue.
In 1997 the move was made to the Alice Springs Memorial Club, hence our name now Memo Rovers Netball Club.
Mrs. Lucy Winwood-Smith also from Braitling School is our current Junior Co-ordinator and has been for the past 9 years.
Senior teams have grown significantly from 2 to 10 including 17s & Under. For many years our club had at least one team in each grade.
Today the Memo Rovers Netball Club is one of the largest and strongest club in the Alice Springs Netball Association. Through our partnership with The Memo Club our netball club continues to grow from strength to strength.
